Werewolves – A Stay Behind Network

Two Members of the Peter Group in Munidorf
In January 1945, two members of the notorious terror group Petergruppen were sent to Northern Jutland to organize a werewolf movement under the codename “Unternehmen Jürgen” – a kind of Stay Behind network meant to create chaos behind enemy lines if the Germans were forced to make a strategic withdrawal from Denmark. The two members, Ib Nedermark Hansen and Aage Thomas Mariegaard, were tasked with recruiting members for the werewolf groups and burying weapons, explosives, etc., that would be used for sabotage behind enemy lines. Critical infrastructure such as bridges, power plants, gasworks, and public buildings were to be blown up if the Russians or the Western Allies took control of Denmark.

20 Boxes Packed in Munidorf
The 20 specially designed boxes with weapons were packed in Munidorf near Aabybro, as it was the ammunition depot where most of the weapons and explosives to be used were available. The materials that were not found there were sent to Aabybro from the Gestapo depot in Aalborg. Once the boxes were packed, they were collected after dark by Nedermark Hansen, Mariegaard, and a few local helpers and transported to carefully selected locations in Northern Jutland, where they were buried. These caches were to be retrieved by the werewolf groups when needed.
Fortunately, the weapon caches were never used, as the Germans gave up the fight after their total surrender in early May 1945, and the police found all the buried caches in the summer of 1945.

Both were known members of the infamous Petergruppen, which was the German response to sabotage activities. This group was infamous for being “in the business of death and destruction,” responsible for several murders of prominent Danes and numerous explosions of well-known and busy locations.
Both were sentenced to death and executed in 1947.
